Group Discussion Teacher instructed the story of “A Good Heart” A good heart is the best beauty of all, it also fulfilled the joyfulness. Helping of happiness 助人為快樂之本 Play one or two game to interact with your students: Ex. 2nd section of class (approximately 60 minutes) Bible Story The Good Samaritan Luke 10 :25~37 25On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 26"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" 27He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' 28"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." 29But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' 36"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" 37The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise." Focus on be the kind of neighbor Jesus would be. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Use some Scripture’s vocabulary. A Good Heart is the Best Beauty of All By Qiu Baili When I was young, I wanted to be a beauty with an attractive appearance. I always imagined that I was a beautiful princess with big eyes and white skin. Sometimes my mother would ask me, “Who are you?” I would answer proudly, “I am the princess Snow White.” Than mother would smile and kiss my white and pink cheek and say, “Oh my beauty.” I was walking on the top of the world. But one thing happened when I was 10 years old, the age when girls begin thinking about their appearance. And this event made me become self-conscious. In order to celebrate the coming new year, our class planned to put on a drama which was produced by students. Everyone in our class knew that I was fond of acting as I could recite expressively and fluently. There seemed no doubt that I would be the main heroine. But when the teacher, who was in charge of the drama group, told me that he had chosen another girl to act the part of the heroine, while I would play her sister, an unimportant character in the play, I was greatly surprised. The reason for the change was very simple. The girl was more beautiful than I. seeking his regretful eyes, I could not speak. Anger and sorrow seized me. I ran out of the room madly. I cannot remember how many people I bumped into on my way. As soon as I got home, I seated myself in front of the mirror. The image of my small eyes and big nose looked uglier through my rage. I could not help crying: “This was unfair! Why did not God give me a charming appearance when he blessed me with life?” The feeling of a gentle touch on my shoulder made me raise my tearful eyes. It was my mother. She forced me to look at her face. There was something in her mild eyes, what she said next is something I will never forget. “You are loveable not only because you are beautiful, but you are beautiful because you are loveable. Listen, my dear, you are always the most beautiful girl in my mind.” “Oh my wonderful mom,” I cried. And fell into her warm arms without wiping away my tears. From then on, I have not cared so much about whether I am a beauty of not. I try to enrich myself with knowledge. I am kind to people and always ready to help others. I have also become more popular with my classmates. Now, when someone tells me, “You are beautiful.” I may smile because it is just a compliment. But when someone says, “You are lovable,” I smile from the heart because I know that a beautiful appearance will disappear gradually as time goes by. But a good heart is the best wealth I can possess. It lasts forever. (Written by Qiu Baili, Jiangsu, published in 21st Century, China Daily, July 14, 1999) Q1. What is happiness? 什麼是快樂? Day 3/ WEDNESDAY: Friendship & Loyalty BY BONITA YU Large Group Gathering (approximately 30 minutes): Opening/worship songs Large group game Divided into small group: 1st section of class (approximately 60`minutes) Review the teaching of Tuesday. The emphasis for this day is to get to know the student’s more/bonding. In addition, help the students understand that Jesus is more than a godly figure, but is also our friend, who gives us friends. #62 Hobby, hobby (15-30mins) o Hobby: a current/pastime activity that is important to the student (usually something they are very interested in) Have students write down their favorite hobby on a small piece of paper. Then collect them all. Read one hobby at a time and have the class guess to which it belongs. After the correct person is guessed, ask him/her to tell the group about the hobby (ex. One thing he/she enjoys about it). You can also have a few other students ask them questions about the hobby (ex: What do you watch on television? Where do you play ping pong? What computer games do you like playing?). After talking about hobbies, you are getting to know about the students’ interests. Now you can use their interests to get them to practice speaking while you get to know them better. #14 Friendship (20mins) Ask the students to name qualities associated with the word “friendship” or “friend” and write them on the board. Then have students copy the list onto a sheet of paper. Ask them to put a check next to what they think are the three most important qualities of a friend to them. Have students pair up and compare choices with each other and give reasons why. Then have pairs share one or two qualities they agree with to the class. Group Discussion (15mins) Teacher can talk about friends/loyalty How do you make new friends? What do you do with your friends? How do you show kindness to your friends? What would the perfect friend be like? How would he/she act toward you? Game/Activity: 2nd section of class (approximately 60 minutes) Bible Story The story of Ruth and Naomi (Ruth 1&2) [**Recommended: You may also write your own adaptive version with vocabulary you want to teach. Also fit the story to grade level you are teaching.] In a place called Moab there lived a nice family. Elimelech, his wife Naomi and their two sons moved there because there was more food there than where they used to live. After a while Elimelech died but Naomi wasn't alone she still had two sons. Her sons got married but after about ten years they died too. At least Naomi still had her sons’ wives to keep her company; their names were Orpah and Ruth. Naomi called her sons wives and told them, "I am going to go back to where I used to live and I would like you also to go back to your family where you used to live. May God show you kindness as you have showed me." All the women cried and hugged each other because they were such good friends. Orpah didn't want to leave Naomi but Naomi told her not to worry, she would be fine. So Orpah left to go back to her family. But no matter what Naomi said to Ruth, Ruth would not leave. "Don't ask me to leave. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your friends will be my friends and your God will be my God." So Ruth and Naomi returned to Bethlehem together. It was a good thing Ruth went with Naomi because Bethlehem was very far away and Naomi couldn't have traveled all that way by herself. Notice that Ruth never complains but is a good friend to Naomi. She wasn't expecting anything in return, she just wanted to help. When they got there Ruth decided that she should do some kind of work. It was harvest time, so she worked in the fields following behind the harvesters and picked up any barley that they had dropped. The owner of the field came by to greet the harvesters and noticed Ruth in the field. He asked one of the harvesters who she was. "She came back from Moab with Naomi, that's all I know." Lucky for Ruth the owner of the field was Boaz, he was a kind man who believed in God. He had also been related to Elimelech (Naomi's husband that died). Boaz went to go talk to Ruth, he said to her, "Don't go work in any other field but stay here with the other servant girls. I will make sure you are safe and whenever you are thirsty go and get a drink from the water jars." When Ruth heard this she bowed down to Boaz and asked, "Why are you being so nice to me, I'm not even from here." Boaz replied, "I know what you've done for Naomi, you left your family and moved to a place you've never been. May the Lord reward you for your kindness." Ruth thanked Boaz and continued with her work in the hot sun. Boaz even ordered his workers to drop extra barley so Ruth could have more for herself. Ruth took all the barley home and shared what she had with Naomi. And eventually Ruth married Boaz and everyone was very happy! • Focus on: God gives us friends. Love and support each other without expecting something in return. Smaller children: Being a good friend takes a long time to learn. A good friend is loyal, which means you keep your promises and sometimes when you don't feel like being a friend you are anyway. Sometimes our friends aren't perfect and they make mistakes but we make mistakes too, and we don't want our friends to leave us when that happens. God gives us friends when we need them, and we should treat them like a gift from God. Just like in the story, Naomi could've insisted the women come with her, but she was unselfish and wanted them to be free to go home to be with their families. And Ruth had such a good attitude and wanted to help, she moved away from everyone she knew and went to work to help Naomi. Ruth was a good and loyal friend to Naomi. God blessed her with a good friend, Boaz, who she marries. She didn't tell everyone what a good friend she was, she knew that she should be a friend like God wanted her to be. For the older children, we expand on this message and say: We need to love and support our friends without expecting something in return. Being a good friend takes a lot of work and Ruth and Naomi are good examples of how we can treat each other. Teach some vocabulary/idioms/phrases from the story (bold-faced in story) Game/Activity: Day 4/ THURSDAY: Forgiveness BY BONITA YU Large Group Gathering (approximately 30 minutes): Opening/worship songs Large group game Divided into small group: 1st section of class Review the teaching of Wednesday. We just learned about friendship, and sometimes our relationships can be hurt by mistakes. Nobody is perfect. We offend and hurt people, even our family and friends. Forgiveness is not easy either. Note: Forgiveness is not easily understood by many cultures. To introduce forgiveness, use the story of the prodigal son. You can read the story out loud with translation, draw pictures or, act it out (best choice because you can make it silly for kids). Bible story o The prodigal son [**Recommended: You may also write your own adaptive version with vocabulary you want to teach. Also fit the story to grade level you are teaching.] There once was a father that had two sons. One day the younger son said to his father, "Father, could you give me my inheritance?" (Inheritance is money the father would give his children after he had died.) So the father thought about it and decided his sons could have the money now, and he split it evenly between them. Very soon after the younger son received the money, he decided that since he had so much money he would move to a different country and have some fun with it. When he left, he left for good. He took every last thing he had and didn't plan on returning. He wanted to be grown up and spend all his money how he wanted with no one to tell him what to do. So he just left. He left a big farm with many hired men with everything he needed, he left his family, and more importantly he left his father who trusted him enough to give him the money. This probably made his father very sad and I'm sure he missed him very much. While the son was gone he spent all the money he had right away. He didn't think to save any of it. He ate out every meal every day, he bought fancy cars, he threw wild parties and spent money on many other things that God wouldn't be happy with. After he had spent all his money, the country he was living in became very poor and they hardly had enough food for everyone. It was even worse for people who had no money because food became even more expensive, so it was very hard for poor people to get any food. The son was in trouble. He had no money, no place to live, he had nothing to eat, so he had to get a job. The only job he could find was feeding pigs. He was so hungry he tried to eat the food that the pigs were eating but his boss caught him and told him if he ever saw him doing that again he would lose his job. That night as the son was walking home his stomach wouldn't stop growling, he was so hungry. He saw some people walking towards him and he asked them if they could give him any money for food, but no one would give him anything. Everyone was so poor it was hard to share with anyone. The son went to bed hungry and when he woke up he realized something. When he lived with his father even the hired men had more food than they needed, and now he was starving to death. At that moment he made a plan. He would go back to his father's house and say to him, 'I have sinned against God and against you. I don't deserve to be called your son, so hire me and I will work for you." He knew that if he became like a hired man on his father's farm he would still be better off than he was right now. He would always have a warm place to stay and food to eat. So he headed for home. It took the son a long time to get home, he was just hoping that his dad would let him work at the farm and let him be a hired man. The son was walking up the to farm but while he was still a long way off and he could see someone notice him and start to run towards him. He was sure that they must have been expecting someone else, no one would be excited to see him. As the person got closer he realized it was his father and he was yelling, "My son! My son! You are finally home!" He couldn't believe it. His father threw his arms around him and kissed him. But the son quickly said, "Father, I have sinned against God and against you. I don't deserve to be called your son..." The son wanted to continue but the father said to one of his servants, "Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the biggest calf and kill it. Let's have a party and celebrate because my son was lost and is found!" A little while later, the older son was working in the field and heard music and dancing. So he called to one of the servants and asked what was going on. "Your brother has come home and your father is having a party for his return." This upset the older brother and he refused to go join the party. The father heard that he was upset, so he went to talk to him and invited him to join the party. But the son refused saying, "Look! I have been working for you all these years and I've never disobeyed you. Yet you never had a big party for me to celebrate with my friends. But now my younger brother has come home, spent all the money you gave him, and you kill the biggest calf for him!" "But, my son," the father said, "you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. We had to celebrate and be glad because this brother of yours was lost and now he is found." • Notes for teacher: In this parable the father in the story is just like God. This is how God would be if we ran away from him and we started doing things we shouldn't. He doesn't give up on us when we do things that are wrong, and he will always forgive us if we've truly changed and repent for what we've done. Now the older brother in this story just shows how most of us would act if this happened to us. We would all be upset if our younger brother or sister ran away for a long time and did a whole bunch of bad things and then came home and your parents threw a big party for him. The father who had been wronged, was forgiving. But the eldest son, who had not been wronged, was unforgiving. In this parable Jesus gives a clear picture of God and what God is like. God is truly kinder than us. • Use the story for vocabulary. 2nd section of class #65 Forgiveness (20min-30) Forgiveness means that you do not hold grudges. Do not seek to get even. Forgiveness tries to help, not hurt. It makes it possible to do good for those who do wrong to you. Forgiveness is the restoration or a fellowship. It brings joy, peace of mind and harmony. Ask each learner to write his/her definition of forgiveness. Ask if anybody will be willing to share his/her definition. Group Discussion (15mins) Why do most people find it so difficult to forgive? In you culture how do you seek forgiveness? [Change questions based on level of students.] Why is it so important to forgive? Can there be harmony if there has not been forgiveness after an offense? What would cause a friendship to be aborted in Chinese/Taiwanese culture? Have students get in pairs. Ask them to do a role-pla of an occasion when one of them offends/hurts the other person, and their friendship is resorted through forgiveness. Game/Activity: Question?
